The study suggests that if you have apnea and do not treat it consistently you dramatically increase your blood sugar and fat levels, stress hormones and blood pressure and lower your metabolism, leading to weight gain. This study emphasizes the importance of therapy for OSA to prevent its metabolic and cardiovascular consequences. Most of the time patients with OSA have a hard time tolerating treatment with CPAP, which is usually prescribed first. It is important that these patients contact a sleep specialist who can assist them find a sleep dentist who is qualified in fitting them with mouth retainer devices which are as effective as CPAP in most cases because patient will actually wear them.
